Automatic guided vehicles for non industrial purposes such as military or security ( or landing on other planets or asteroids) offer operators the ability to remotely access areas that are in some ways dangerous or hazardous. These vehicles or machines have been limited by the power source or fuel as they must carry what every energy they need with them.
Electric drives are mainly responsible for the viability of these machines with their range and capabilities being limited by the battery technology they employ. Typically lead acid or lithium ion batteries are currently being used. However with the advent of ultra-capacitors designers now have access possibly a better storage options of electric drive AGV’s.
A unique, multipurpose UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) that will be unveiled at this month’s DSEI 2015 will be the first vehicle of its kind to use ultra-capacitor technology. As you can see, the turret design for this lends itself to military applications, but that is whole other discussion as to whether we should be automating our weapons.
